Save Allington House Sculptures

In the 1980's Barry Baldwin sculpted an amazing triptych honoring various species of endangered animals and installed it on the Allington House building in London. The 12 ton limestone sculpture is one of the most impressive stone carvings ever made, both from both artistic and engineering points of view. The majority of the pieces protrude out from the wall in which they are anchored, which given the weight and tensile strength of stone is no small accomplishment. The lifelike textures on the various animals can probably not be found on any other stone in the world.

Recently Land Securities, the company that owns the building to which the sculptures are attached, has said that they plan to destroy the sculptures while they renovate their building. This callous disregard for wonder and beauty is the same attitude that has caused these animals to face extinction. Though Land Securities may hold the deed to the building, that only means that they are stewards for the artwork. They are not owners that may do what they will; they are caretakers that have signed up for the responsibility of preservation. Similarly, land owners should not feel free to destroy plants and animals as they see fit, but rather feel the duty to protect the life that is in their trust.
