Steinbeck

When people ask me who my favorite author is, without the slightest hesitation I can tell them that it is John Steinbeck. His writing is simple, of the earth, and yet it manages to expose the pure beauty of the human spirit. One of my favorite passages of his is Chapter 15 of The Grapes of Wrath. It is a story of a waitress learning to look past her prejudices and showing kindness to a poor migrant family. If you haven't read the book, I urge you to at least read that chapter (it stands on its own, almost like an essay, so no context is needed).
